Montecelli's work was an inspiration to many other artists including Vincent van Gogh, who frequented Montecelli's Paris exhibition during the spring of 1886 and has referred favorably to Montecelli in many of his letters and remarks. This painting dates back to Monticelli's Second Marseilles Period of 1871–75. A similar still-life of flowers in a brass bowl is located at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.
