Pierre Bonnard was born at Fontenay-aux-Roses, a village outside of Paris. Although studying as a lawyer and pursuing law as an initial career, Bonnard devoted his free time to study painting and took courses at the Académie Julian, an experimental art school in Paris, where he met contemporaries that became friends throughout the course of his career and lifetime. Bonnard traveled to Saint-Tropez in 1909 to further study the light and atmospheric qualities of the Mediterranean, influenced by painters such as Henri Matisse and Paul Signac. He returned almost every year to the South of France after this trip, creating landscapes and seascapes demonstrating the area's beauty.
