THE 2009 KREEGER MUSEUM GALA

Soirée Suisse

Saturday, May 30, 2009

On Saturday, May 30, more than 180 Trustees, Patrons and friends gathered for the 2009 Kreeger Museum Gala. His Excellency the Ambassador of Switzerland and Mrs. Urs Ziswiler were Honorary Patrons of the evening. Honorary Chairs were Ineke and Peter Kreeger, Carol and David Ingall, Linda and Jay Freedman and Ingrid and Robert Davis.

Judy A. Greenberg, Director of The Kreeger Museum welcomed attendees to the event. "We are delighted to be able to gather this evening to celebrate the successful partnership between the Embassy of Switzerland and The Kreeger Museum, and to benefit the Museum's educational and public programming that would not be possible without the support of everyone here." Following her remarks, His Excellency the Ambassador of Switzerland discussed the year-long collaboration between the two organization, through lectures, tours of the Swiss Residence and an art workshop for children inspired by the work of Paul Klee, currently on view at the Embassy.

The evening program began with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner under the domes of the Great Hall, Salon and Monet Gallery. Before a lavish dessert buffet on The Kreeger Museum's Sculpture Terrace, guests were treated to a moving, musical interlude featuring renowned Swiss Tenor, Gilbert-Michel Rolle. Mr. Rolle delighted the audience with a selection of French melodies and American show tunes.

THE 2007 KREEGER MUSEUM GALA

El Vol de L’Alosa

October 13, 2007

El Vol de L'Alosa (The Flight of the Lark), a book of Catalan poetry illustrated by Joan Miró and acquired by David and Carmen Kreeger in 1973, was the inspiration for the 2007 Kreeger Museum Gala. In celebration of David and Carmen Kreeger's friendship with Miró, more than 140 Trustees, Patrons and friends gathered for an evening filled with the tastes and sounds of Spain. The highlight of the evening was a series of flamenco dances, featuring members of The Martinez Flamenco Dance Company. Accompanied by music and song from famed Spanish Guitarist Paco De Málaga, the unforgettable performance gloriously united the senses in celebration of art and music - a celebration truly in spirit of The Kreeger Museum.

Director Judy A. Greenberg and the 2007 Gala Committee are most grateful for the honorary patronage of His Excellency the Ambassador of Spain and Mrs. Carlos Westendorp.

Gene Davis: Interval
April 14 – July 31

The Kreeger Museum is presenting an extensive exhibition of the work of Gene Davis including stripe paintings, micro-paintings and works on paper. Gene Davis was one of Washington, DC’s art world icons, best known for his explorations of vertical stripes. Although he was working during the heyday of the 1960s when artists were turning away from abstract expressionism, his work provides for a very personal kind of visual experience. The exhibition’s co-curators, Jean Lawlor Cohen and Andrea Pollan, examine both the spatial and temporal associations in the artist’s use of stripes while putting forward a musical interpretation. The exhibition is structured into zones illustrating such subjects as color harmonics, syncopated rhythms, notations, and experiments.

ColorField.remix

ColorField.remix is a citywide project spanning the spring and summer of 2007, celebrating the many legacies of the Color Field and Washington Color School artists such as Gene Davis, Mark Rothko, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and Helen Frankenthaler. Events range from historically focused shows of artists associated with the group to contemporary shows and events to be held at cultural and commercial venues around Washington.
