Josef Albers began his Homage to the Square series in 1949, and continued to create these works until the end of his life in 1976. Each painting in this series follows a strict compositional format consisting of a group of concentric squares, exploring the interactions between colors. Albers created the works by using paint directly from the tube, spreading it with a palette knife onto the primed board.
