Elijah Jamal Balbed is an award-winning saxophonist, composer, and educator from Washington, DC. An alum of Howard University’s legendary jazz program, Elijah actually started his performing career before then - venturing down to U Street as a teenager to seek out places to play and musicians to meet. While at Howard, Elijah became even more immersed in the local jazz scene - often performing at venues like Twins Jazz, Bohemian Caverns, and HR-57. Around the same time, Elijah received a life-changing call to perform with the Godfather of Go-Go Chuck Brown at Blues Alley. This connection led him to performing with the great George Duke, just months before Duke passed. Since then Elijah has performed with the likes of Winard Harper, Keyon Harrold, Gloria Estefan, Jazzmeia Horn, Igmar Thomas and The Revive Big Band, Lauryn Hill, Fantasia, Lalah Hathaway, and many others. He has appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk with The Dream, Noochie’s Front Porch with CL Smooth, and Season 4, Episode 11 of the Netflix Series House of Cards.

Elijah has released 5 albums as a leader, with one forthcoming. In 2012 Elijah released his debut album Checking In, and in 2015 his follow-up Lessons From the Streets. From then until 2019, Elijah wrote music for a work that resulted in his third studio release The Karma Suite. Elijah presented The Karma Suite at The Kennedy Center (2020), The Clarice Performing Arts Center (2021) and DC Jazz Festival (2021) - the latter a result of winning the 2020 DC Jazz Prix International Band Competition. In 2025 and 2026, Elijah released The Crab Shack Sessions (Volumes 1 and 2), respectively. For this concert, Elijah will present music from his upcoming album Standard•Ish - his first blatant “standards record” that features primarily Jazz standards, but arranged in a way that still reflects Elijah’s original sound and approach. There are also three new original offerings on this record.

Since 2021, Elijah has been the Curator of Jazz here at The Kreeger Museum, as well as Ciel Social Club in downtown DC. In addition, he is the director of the Kaleidoscope Orchestra - one of DC’s longest running big bands, and the JazzDC Youth Ensemble - a collaboration with DC Jazz Festival, DC Youth Orchestra, and Sitar Arts Center.
