David Lloyd Kreeger was forty-three years old when he and Carmen Kreeger purchased their first work of art, Ravens Over the Valley (1948-51), an oil painting by Israeli artist Mordecai Ardon.

With the richness of color, texture, and shape in this lyrical, semi-abstract landscape, Ravens Over the Valley, offers an early hint of what the Kreegers’ later described as their motivation for collecting — “the pure enjoyment derived from the works of art.”
