The Flight of the Lark was the result of a plan by journalist Don Pedro Serra to publish a special edition of the “Mallorcan Daily Bulletin” in honor of Joan Miró. A group of Mallorcan poets wished to render homage to Miró. The following poets are included: Robert Graves, Miguel Bota, Guillem Colom, Miguel Dolc, Eliseu Feijoo, Joseph M. Forteza, Miguel Forteza, Guillem Frontera, Josep M. Llompart, Margarida Magraner, Joan Manresa, Llorenc Moyà, Josep M. Palau, Jaume Pomar, Miguel Pons, Miguel Angel Riera, Frederic Suau, B. Vidal I Tomàs, Llorenc Vidal.

Miro on the project:

“We must go on working, fighting for the culture of the islands. It occurs to me that we might perhaps bring out an anthology containing the poems… Well. perhaps it would be better to do two editions, one at a very economical price, within reach of everybody’s pocket, and then a numbered edition for bibliophiles. I would do a drawing, a graphic sign, for each poem. I think it’s an idea worth thinking over…”

As a contribution to the festivities being planned on the occasion of his 80th birthday in 1973, Joan Miró created that artist’s book, The Flight of the Lark, to honor the works of the nineteen Mallorcan poets featured in the daily Bulletin. For the project, special Guarro paper was commissioned, and Miró’s own signature was figured into the watermarks on each sheet of the book. For each poem he executed a unique graphic sign and, to hold the unbound sheets, a cloth box in black on red (red, symbolizing Spain) and black on blue (symbolizing the sea around Mallorca). After this one use, the Bodoni 12 type was melted down. As a further expression of his dedication to the poets, who were his friends, Miró created a new lithograph to include as a memento – an original black print with colors added by his own hand. Ninety copies of the book with the lithograph were prepared, and the Kreegers purchased number 50 when they attended the April celebration.
