Painting Collection![]() Felix Ziem The Doge's Palace, Seen from della Grazia Canal French, 1821 – 1911 26 3/8 x 43 inches Between 1841-1843, Ziem travelled from Nice to Odessa, Kiev, Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. The colorful scenery so impressed him that he abandoned his career as an architect and turned to painting instead. He was almost immediately successful, and it is interesting to note that the first two pictures he exhibited at the Salon in 1849 were entitled Vue du Bosphore and the Grand Canal à Venise— titles that occur in the Kreeger Collection. Ziem painted these two subjects over and over for the remainder of his life. His use of color and his atmospheric effects were admired by artists from Monet to Van Gogh, who referred to him in his letters. - From the catalogue, The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. David Lloyd Kreeger, Editor Margy P.
